Empowerment through Permaculture
Permaculture is a tool for empowerment, offering people and communities a way back to the once commonly known ways of living and sustaining and in some cases thriving.
At one time, each and every person knew survival strategies—
where to forage for and hunt for their food, what plants were medicines or poisons, how to find and collect water, where and how to construct shelter, how to make and mend their own clothing and how to live with the seasons of the planet.
Permaculture serves as a bridge for bringing people not only back to the land but back to their human nature, that is as extensions of the Earth, beings on the interconnected web of life.
Permaculture is the opposite of the Cartesian philosophical belief system that the world is a machine and a reservoir of resources for the human machine to consume.
Permaculture believes in a reciprocal and mutually beneficial relationship with the land and natural systems,
that offer back as much as the human takes. It is the role of the human being to facilitate and guard over the natural biological and geological systems
by being active participants,
not bystanders, victims or ravenous consumers.
Herbalism is the study and practice of botany, ethnobotany, pharmacology, phytochemistry, biology, chemistry, ecology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, permaculture, farming, gardening, medicine making, cooking, first aid, community health, counseling, psychology, conservation, restoration, activism, alchemy, history, mythology, allegory, storytelling, and for some… witchcraft.
