Many of us go to school or learn how to manage people, money or a business, but we don't always think about managing our energy.
This is no longer a woo-woo concept, even science tells us that everything is energy.
We all know what it feels like to be burnt out, stressed and feeling like we’re completely maxed out. It happens to all of us from time to time, but constant misuse of our energy can result in more serious physical, emotional and mental conditions that will affect our way of life and our loved ones too.
Learning to manage our own energy and prevent ourselves from experiencing the roller coaster of highs and lows is an essential skill we could all benefit from learning.
This is ongoing work and will require constant attention and dedication, but it’s well worth doing!
The first piece is physical.
The body has needs that must be met to perform optimally. This includes good nutrition, proper sleep, exercise and attending to any conditions that arise that may put the body out of balance.
Another important part of energy management lies within our minds. Have you ever over thought things to the point you were completely exhausted? Or stressed yourself out worrying about something that you probably couldn’t even control? These are examples of mental exhaustion. It can also happen when we use our brains extra hard for example studying or cramming for a test or going hard on a work project that requires a lot of mental thought.
Our emotional energy also plays a huge part in this.
Have you ever had a big cry or meltdown and felt completely drained afterwards? Our emotions can use up a lot of energy. While it’s natural and healthy to have an emotional release from time to time, if it’s happening often it’s probably contributing to energy leaks in your being.
The next piece is less tangible but extremely important which is being mindful of the subtle energies all around us and how they can affect us. Many of us on the planet are going through a profound spiritual transformation at this time which often comes with a heightened sensitivity to the energies, thoughts and projections of others.
Social media has really emphasized this and now we can be connected to many more people through their online profiles, which believe it or not can be a massive gateway to energy loss if you’re not aware. Firstly, scrolling and spending too much time online can drain our energy. Secondly, we become open to the attacks, projections and emotions of others when we look at their pictures and read their words and vice versa.
The last piece ties into this - which are the people, environments and situations we find ourselves in and surround ourselves with. If you’re constantly hanging around negative people or in an unsavoury place that feels icky, it’s probably draining you. If it feels icky this is already your first clue that something is off!
Navigating all of this can seem overwhelming, but once you start to fix your awareness on each of these four areas, you will begin to see where you might be losing or leaking energy. When we can spot these problem areas and draw our attention to them, we will naturally begin to feel more vital, alive and ready to tackle whatever life throws our way.
The key tool in managing all of this is our awareness. When we commit to our own greatness and to operating at our optimal levels, it’s so important to be constantly mindful of what is happening in and around us.
There’s no quick, magic fix to have more energy or sustain it long term - the magic is in the medicine of presence. Do your best to observe yourself and your habits each day and be willing to make changes whenever necessary.
Although this might seem like more work in itself, the payoff is feeling more clear, energized and able to handle whatever is happening with more ease and grace. This in itself is a wonderful gift we give ourselves and everyone we interact with.
When we nurture and support each of these 5 areas mentioned here, we can live a more balanced, joyful and energized life which everyone benefits from! Learning how to manage your own energy might just be one of the most beneficial things you ever do.
